Introduction to Surah Al-Baqarah
Surah Al-Baqarah is the 2nd and longest chapter of the Holy Quran, containing an extraordinary 286 verses spanning 2½ Juz (Juz 1-3). Revealed in Madinah, it is the most comprehensive Surah in the Quran, covering themes of theology, law, history, ethics, and spirituality. It is named after the story of the cow that the Israelites were commanded to sacrifice — illustrating obedience and the dangers of excessive questioning.
This Surah is immensely beloved by Muslims. The Prophet ﷺ described it as "the peak of the Quran" (Sinam al-Quran) and stated that Shaytan flees from the house in which it is recited.

Key Themes & Lessons
1. The Greatest Verse of the Quran
Ayatul Kursi (verse 255) is confirmed by the Prophet ﷺ as the greatest verse in the Quran. It encapsulates the entirety of Islamic monotheism in a single verse — Allah's sovereignty, His eternal nature, and His absolute dominion over all creation. Reciting it before sleep brings angelic protection until morning.
2. The Last Two Verses — A Divine Gift
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him." (Sahih Bukhari) These verses were given to the Prophet ﷺ during the miraculous Night Journey (Isra & Mi'raj) — a unique distinction among all Quranic verses.
3. Comprehensive Islamic Legislation
Surah Baqarah contains more legal rulings than any other Surah: the obligation of fasting in Ramadan, the laws of divorce, the prohibition of interest (riba), the longest verse on financial contracts (verse 282), and guidelines for charity, prayer, and Hajj. It is essentially the legal backbone of the Quran.
4. Protection from Evil
Multiple authentic Hadiths confirm that reciting Surah Baqarah in one's home causes Shaytan to leave and not return for three days. It is also a protection against black magic and the evil eye, making it one of the most spiritually protective chapters one can recite.
"Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, for to take recourse to it is a blessing, to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it."
— Sahih Muslim 804
