Key Themes & Lessons

1. The Night of Decree (Laylatul Qadr)

The Surah begins by referencing the "blessed night" on which the Quran was revealed — identified by scholars as Laylatul Qadr. On this single night, all matters for the coming year are decreed. This connection makes Surah Dukhan especially significant during the last ten nights of Ramadan.

2. Historical Warnings — The Lesson of Pharaoh

The Surah recounts the story of Musa (Moses) and Pharaoh, demonstrating how arrogance and rejection of divine guidance leads to destruction. The people of Pharaoh, despite possessing great wealth and power, were utterly annihilated — a warning to all who oppose the truth.

3. The Tree of Zaqqum

The Surah contains one of the most vivid descriptions of punishment in the Hereafter, including the terrible Tree of Zaqqum — food of the sinful that boils in stomachs like molten metal. This graphic imagery serves as a powerful deterrent against transgression.

"Whoever recites Surah Ad-Dukhan on the night of Friday, seventy thousand angels will ask forgiveness for him until the morning."
