Luqman's Advice to His Son

Verse 13 — Do Not Associate Partners with Allah
And [mention] when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate anything with Allah. Indeed, associating others is great injustice." (31:13)
Verses 17-19 — Prayer, Patience, and Humility
"O my son, establish prayer, enjoin good, forbid evil, and be patient — indeed, that is of the matters requiring resolve. And do not turn your cheek in contempt toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice." (31:17-19)

Key Themes & Lessons

1. The Foundation of Tawheed (Monotheism)

Luqman's very first piece of advice to his son is the absolute prohibition of Shirk (associating partners with Allah). This establishes monotheism as the bedrock upon which all other moral and spiritual teachings are built. Without pure Tawheed, no good deed holds ultimate value.

2. Honoring Parents

Verses 14-15 command kindness and gratitude toward parents, especially mothers — "His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness." However, obedience to parents has a limit: if they command Shirk, one must respectfully decline while still treating them with kindness in this world.

3. Character and Social Conduct

The advice to lower one's voice, walk with humility, and avoid arrogance forms a complete social etiquette guide. Luqman even uses a powerful analogy: "Indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys" (31:19) — teaching that loudness and arrogance are despised qualities.

4. Allah's Omniscience

Verse 16 presents the stunning illustration: "O my son, even if it be the weight of a mustard seed within a rock or in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth." Nothing escapes Allah's knowledge — every deed, no matter how small, will be accounted for.
