Key Themes & Lessons
1. The Danger of Material Obsession
The Surah addresses the fundamental human tendency to become so consumed by accumulating wealth, children, status, and possessions that one forgets the purpose of existence. The word "alhakum" (diverted you) implies that worldly competition acts as a distraction from remembering Allah and preparing for the Hereafter.
2. The Wake-Up Call of Death
"Until you visit the graveyards" — this verse delivers a chilling reminder that no amount of worldly accumulation can prevent death. The use of "visit" is significant, as scholars note it implies that the grave is merely a temporary stop before the ultimate destination.
"The Prophet ﷺ said: 'If the son of Adam had a valley of gold, he would want two. And nothing fills his mouth except the dust [of the grave].'"
— Sahih al-Bukhari 6439
3. Accountability for Every Blessing
The final verse is perhaps the most sobering: on the Day of Judgment, every human being will be questioned about the blessings and pleasures they enjoyed. This includes health, free time, food, safety, and every comfort — were they used in gratitude and obedience, or squandered in heedlessness?
